Brake Calipers 101

Brake calipers are the clamps on your vehicle's disc brakes. They contain brake pistons; each has at least one piston, in fact, depending on what kind it is. Each also has a brake pad attached to it. Most VW models have front calipers, at least, though some can have rear calipers, too. What they do is similar to what drum brakes do, except not with drums and shoes; they fasten the pads to brake rotors. This helps generate the friction your car or SUV needs to slow down and stop. How they work is a process that starts when you step on the brake pedal; the master brake cylinder pressurizes brake fluid, the fluid goes through a series of brake hoses and lines, the pistons start moving, and the calipers engage, clamping to the rotors and producing said resistance using the pads between. The process also creates heat; the rotors have the secondary job of dissipating it.
