Volkswagen Golf was a compact car that Volkswagen released in 1974. It's run for eight generations, but more than likely, your model's from between 1985 and 2021. Older trim levels ranged widely. In the 1980s, for example, you could get base, GL, and GT, plus GTI and GTI 16-Valve. GLS, TDI, GTI 8-Valve, Limited Edition, Celebration Edition, City, Sport, and GTI VR6 were offered in the 1990s. Jazz, K2, Trek, and Wolfsburg Edition trims were also available. Engine options during these decades ranged from 1.6- and 1.8-liter to 1.9-liter diesel, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, and 2.8-liter V6.

In the early 2000s, GTI GLS, GTI GLX, GTI 1.8T, and GTI 337 trims became options, as did GTI 20th Anniversary and GLS TDI. For model year 2010, you could get either a 2.0-liter I4 turbodiesel engine or a 2.5-liter, in-line, five-cylinder engine; they mated to either five- or six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. Features included eight-speaker audio, an in-dash six-disc CD changer, and touch-screen infotainment, plus perks like high-intensity Xenon headlights. You could even get a Cold Weather Package; it brought with it heated seats and a windshield washer system with heated nozzles.

Skip ahead to 2021. That year, TSI, GTI S, GTI SE, and GTI Autobahn trims would become available. You'd also get a choice between turbocharged 1.4-liter and 2.0-liter I4 engines. Transmission options would include six-speed manual, eight-speed automatic, and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT). Features like keyless ignition, alloy wheels, and rain-sensing windshield wipers would be offered, as would a range of other perks depending on trim-- among them, a sport suspension, enhanced brakes, and lots of performance features.
