Different Types of Volkswagen Brakes

There are two for most Volkswagen vehicles: disc brakes and drum brakes. The differences between the two systems are few. Disc brake systems contain brake rotors, brake calipers, and brake pads. Drum brake systems contain brake drums and brake shoes. They both generate the friction used to slow down and stop your car or SUV, just somewhat differently.

Both systems work the same, up to a point. First, the brake pistons engage, traveling the master brake cylinder's bore. This is how brake fluid gets pressurized. The fluid then flows through a network of brake hoses and lines. In a disc brake, the fluid causes the rotors to clamp to the calipers and pads, while in a drum brake, it forces the shoes and drums to fasten together.

When to Replace Your Brakes

That depends, in part, on its condition. To assess that, inspect the brake pedal, fluid, lines, hoses, the brake assemblies, and the parking brake -- every part of the system. If any need to be replaced, do so as soon as possible. Otherwise, the following symptoms will tell you it's likely time:

  • Warnings may light up on the instrumentation
  • Your vehicle may shudder and pull sideways when braking
  • You may hear grinding and other strange noises
  • Your brakes may seem less grippy
  • Your brake pedal may seem overly low or too soft
  • It may take longer than usual to slow down and stop

Before buying brake parts online, though, be sure you're getting genuine ones.
